Do the right thing

As government leaders and stewards of the planet for future generations, we call on you to take a thoughtful and insightful position on seabed mining.  First, there is no need to begin commercial seabed mining in 2020 as there are alternatives to the supply.

Speak with your Minister of Environment and Minister of Foreign Affairs and review your country’s position for the July 2020 UN International Seabed Mining Authority meeting in Jamaica. Make sure you are represented correctly. Your country’s vote matters!

If you are an international organisation such as the World Bank, IMF, OECD, G20, European Union, African Union, or ASEAN, review your organisation’s position on seabed mining.  It is important to signal your organisation’s view on the matter.

If all countries and significant international organisations express their desires for a ten year pause of seabed mining to fully study the vast implications, this will be an important win for the environment, future generations, and thoughtful policymaking and leadership.

2020 is a critical year for the environment, and we should put the planet before profits.  Once we have evaluated the scientific risk, we can then make more thoughtful decisions on the legislation and safeguards that need to be in place.
